Another relaxing day off

Our coach has really been quite generous with the days off. I guess we have been here for over two weeks but we still feel very lucky to have a day off in order to enjoy ourselves a little bit while at the Games.
I woke up about 9:30 to get ready for a TV interview. It was for the NBC affiliate in Sacramento, where I was born, and they even let me give a "shout out" to my Grammy. Then I had a nice leisurely lunch with some of my swimmer friends like Nathalie Coughlin and Larsen Jensen both who had Finals tonight. I hope they do awesome, I'll be watching them on TV.
After lunch I headed off to get a massage in the International Zone. On the bottom floor there were pool tables, and air hockey tables and video games and a little cafe. And upstairs is the massage salon. I just had to walk up and say I wanted a massage and I got one! 45 minutes later I felt completely relaxed. I wish it was that easy back home. I might go again tonight before I go to bed.
Then we all headed out to the velodrome to watch our cycling friends in their team track race. All the tickets were sold out because the Greeks were competing in the event. So, Sara and I, being very stealth and inventive, managed to "accidentally" sneak into the venue. I still don't know how we did it, we didn't even really mean to. But it worked out perfectly and right as we walked in our team was racing. It's really a crazy sport to watch, they're basically flying around on bicycles on a wooden track, horizontal to the ground at about 60 km an hour. Not something I plan on trying anytime soon. They finished 11th, they didn't make the Finals but they were the youngest team there so they did really well.
I have to insert here an observation about European women. A lot of people ask me how they can dress in Europe so they won't look like Americans. Personally, I would just stick to looking like Americans. European women match EVERYTHING in their outfit. The woman next to us today at the velodrome was head to toe in neon orange. Neon orange pants, orange shirt, orange sandals, little orange belt, orange jewlery and neon orange hair clip. It was a lot of neon orange but I suppose she could go jogging at night and be very safe in an outfit like that.
Anyway, then we headed back to the village for dinner and e-mails. We're going to listen to my Greek hip-hop cds and play some UNO. I feel completely refreshed and ready to start our week of competing. Here we go!

    Hi Lauren,

We knew your parents in San Jose, and had the privilege of seeing you and the team swim there before the last Olympics! We know your aunt and uncle here in Houston. Small world. We have enjoyed following your synchro career. I had intended to send you a card before you took off for Athens, but I was finishing my masters and starting up at a new school (school begins incredibly early in Texas -- Aug 11). So, Paul gave me this address so I could wish you well. Say hi to your parents; it is so awesome that they have joined you in Athens. I think they have put in as much time supporting the team. This is a great reward for them!

I put your name on the board in my classroom, so all 660 kids in the school are rooting for you! I shared with them your inspiring story -- though you just missed making the team four years ago, you jumped back into the pool and began training again for this moment. We think that is very inspiring and demonstrates many qualities we are trying to illustrate. I teach the whole school - ages 5 - 11 - and some children don't always have great role models or experiences to draw upon. So, it is fun that they feel as if they "know" somebody competing in the Olympics.

Ours is a brand new school, and I'm not sure all the equipment is hooked up and running. It might be possible to watch you live during the school day. Please let us know exactly when you are performing. I will talk to our technical support to see what we can do.

The kids have a question: in the tv commercial showing a syncro swimmer with Ronald McDonald, are you playing Ronald?

We are excited for you and the team. We are cheering you on from Houston, TX!

    P.S.
I have never done a blog before, and don't know if you can send a message back. Hope so!

    Hey Lauren!!!
I've been reading your blog thing for a few days now. (Bonnie sent the link to my mom-- could you tell her thanks for me?) It's so great to be able to hear first-hand from you how everything is going. I love reading your posts because you write just like how I remember you talking. It's almost like listening to you on a recording or something.
I just wanted post to tell you how very proud I am of you and the rest of the team. You all have worked so hard and have already scaled mountains in your olympic journey. I am reminded every time that I turn on the olympics of how very honored I feel to know such a tremendous group of young women.
My mom, sister, and I are all glued to the TV today (and for the rest of the week until synchro is done)anxious to get a little glimpse or preview of your performance... but we are confident that all of you will do incredible. My brother called today, too to check up on you guys. He's got all of his crew members on his boat rooting for you from Alaska. You've got so much support over here in The States-- so just go out there and do what you love doing!
I love you, miss you and am thinking of you and the rest of the team CONSTANTLY!
    Love ya lots!

P.S: Could you tell Linda "hi" for me?

    Hi Tracy!
Thanks for the support from Texas! Hello to your class also! I'm glad you all are enjoying the Olympics. It's nice when you know someone in the Games. In regards the Ronald McDonald question, no that's not me playing Ronald. However, in the Aflac commercial, with the duck, that's my team in that commercial and I'm the one who gets hit in the face! Thanks again for supporting us, it's working!
